Find out how to strengthen your core

Where you’re at now…

Having a weak core (sometimes referred to as pelvic floor) is often a simple issue that is easy to fix with the right advice and guidance. The problems someone with a weak core will likely have are chronic back pain or a pelvis/lower back that needs realigning regularly (being cracked). However, sometimes there may be a specific cause which makes the treatment a little more complex, but still completely achievable and well within your reach.

The problems you have right now…

A weak core often stems from:

  • Age – muscles weaken over time if not trained and maintained (use it or lose it!)
  • Being overweight
  • Having been overweight then lost a lot of weight
  • Pregnancy, regardless of how the baby was delivered
  • Repetitive strain injuries (lifting and carrying)
  • Surgery which involved the chest or abdomen

What you need help with right now…

If you have a weak core, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to live with it. Seeking both medical and therapeutic support is essential.

If you have a weak core and want to improve it, the advice would be to see a specialist as they will be able to work with you to help you understand what you can do and more importantly how to do it safely. In many cases, a combination of approaches would be used to help improve your core strength and stability, primarily the use of Pilates, to improve mobility and strengthen the deep muscles in the back and stomach to protect the spine. These approaches may include short term medications such as painkillers; some form of physical therapy (often involving manipulation, stretching and other pain relieving exercises); and therapies that improve the connection between the body and mind, such as Yoga and complementary therapies (Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Indian head massage).
